Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is the preferred method for subsurface installation in both environmentally sensitive areas and urban centres. By eliminating open trenching, HDD minimizes surface disruption while enabling precise crossings beneath roads, rivers, buildings, and railway infrastructure.

The process begins with a drill string guided by a specialized drill bit, which is simultaneously rotated and steered along a predetermined bore path. An integrated guidance system transmits real-time data on pitch, roll, and depth, allowing operators to achieve accurate placement over significant distances.

Once the pilot bore is complete, a backreamer and the product pipe are attached to the drill string and pulled back through the bore, enlarging the hole to the required diameter as the product is drawn into position.

Upon completion, surface rehabilitation is limited to the entry and exit points, leaving the surrounding area largely undisturbed.
